An ongoing retirement relationship

What is ongoing financial planning and wealth management?

Ongoing financial planning and wealth management combines continuing advice with portfolio management so decisions can be revisited as the household’s needs and financial environment change.

A retirement plan may begin with projections and recommendations, but real life rarely follows one set of assumptions. Spending changes. Markets decline and recover. Tax rules evolve. A spouse retires, benefits begin or a major purchase becomes important. Ongoing planning creates a relationship in which those changes can be considered within the broader plan.

Fairchild Capital’s Form CRS calls this its comprehensive service. It combines financial planning and portfolio management, provides continuous monitoring of client investments and gives the firm discretionary authority to manage accounts, subject to reasonable restrictions a client may impose.

The short answer

Ongoing wealth management is for households that want more than a plan delivered once. It connects continuing financial guidance with investment implementation and monitoring under an ongoing advisory agreement.

Planning should move with retirement

Why might retirees need ongoing planning?

Income changes

Sources begin and end

Wages may stop, Social Security or pensions may begin and portfolio withdrawals may change as spending evolves.

Markets change

The portfolio moves

Investment results can alter allocation, risk and the resources available for future withdrawals.

Tax decisions recur

Each year creates choices

Withdrawals, conversions, gains, charitable giving and required distributions can require fresh analysis.

Life changes

The plan must adapt

Health, family, housing, travel, caregiving and legacy priorities may change what the household needs.

Ongoing does not mean unchanging.

The value of a continuing relationship is the ability to reconsider decisions as new information appears. Monitoring and planning cannot prevent losses or guarantee a successful retirement outcome.

Your portfolio and financial plan should not live in separate worlds.

Fairchild Capital’s comprehensive service is designed to connect the two.

One relationship, connected decisions

What can ongoing retirement planning address?

Retirement income

Coordinate Social Security, pensions, cash and investment withdrawals with spending needs. Explore retirement income planning.

Tax considerations

Evaluate tax-sensitive withdrawals, gains, Roth conversions and other decisions across multiple years. Individualized tax advice should be confirmed with a qualified tax professional.

Portfolio management

Manage allocation, diversification, liquidity, withdrawals and rebalancing in connection with the financial plan. Explore investment management for retirees.

Benefits and healthcare

Consider Social Security, pensions, Medicare and employer benefits when they affect retirement timing, income or spending.

Major decisions

Evaluate the financial effects of housing, large purchases, gifting, charitable goals or other material changes before acting.

Risk and contingencies

Revisit how market declines, inflation, longevity, healthcare needs or the loss of a spouse could affect the household.

Estate coordination

Review beneficiaries, account ownership and legacy goals while coordinating legal documents and advice with a qualified attorney.

Implementation within the relationship

How ongoing portfolio management works

Under Fairchild Capital’s comprehensive service, the firm continuously monitors investments and takes discretionary authority in client accounts. Discretionary authority generally allows the adviser to place trades without obtaining separate approval for every transaction, subject to the investment agreement and reasonable restrictions imposed by the client.

The portfolio should be built around the retirement plan rather than a generic model alone. Income needs, time horizon, liquidity, taxes and risk capacity may influence how accounts are allocated and managed.

Understand the household

Clarify retirement goals, spending, income, accounts, tax considerations, concerns and important planning constraints.

Evaluate the portfolio

Review current holdings, allocation, concentration, liquidity, risk and investment-related costs.

Connect investments to the plan

Develop an investment approach intended to support the household’s income needs and longer-term goals.

Implement and monitor

Manage accounts within the agreed authority and review investments as markets and the financial plan change.

The plan should remain useful after the first meeting.

Ongoing planning provides a structure for revisiting decisions instead of relying indefinitely on an old set of assumptions.

Understand the cost and relationship

How Fairchild Capital is compensated

Fairchild Capital’s Form CRS states that its comprehensive service charges a percentage-of-assets fee quarterly in arrears. Minimum fees may apply, although the firm reports no minimum account size or investment amount.

An asset-based fee creates a conflict because the fee generally increases as managed assets increase. Fairchild Capital is required to act in clients’ best interests, but prospective clients should still understand the incentive and ask how it may affect recommendations involving assets held outside management, debt repayment, charitable gifts or large withdrawals.

Clients may also incur costs such as fund expenses, custody fees, retirement-account fees, brokerage charges or transaction costs. Fairchild Capital’s Form CRS states that the firm does not receive those fees and that its only compensation comes from advisory fees rather than product-sales commissions.

Fees reduce investment returns over time.

Review the advisory agreement, Form CRS and Form ADV. Ask for the fee that would apply to your household, the services included and an estimate of other expected costs.

Choose the service that fits the need

Ongoing wealth management versus one-time planning

Ongoing comprehensive service

Planning and management

Includes financial planning, discretionary portfolio management and continuous investment monitoring under an ongoing relationship.

Standalone planning

A defined planning engagement

Provides financial planning without Fairchild Capital placing trades or continuously monitoring the client’s investments.

A household comfortable implementing and monitoring recommendations may prefer one-time financial planning. Someone who wants continuing advice and portfolio management may prefer the comprehensive relationship. Neither structure is automatically better; the choice depends on needs, preferences, responsibilities and cost.

Common questions

Ongoing financial planning and wealth management FAQs

What is ongoing financial planning and wealth management?

It is a continuing advisory relationship that combines financial planning with portfolio management. The plan and investments can be reviewed as markets, laws, income, spending and personal circumstances change.

Does Fairchild Capital offer ongoing investment monitoring?

Yes. Its current Form CRS states that comprehensive-service clients receive continuous investment monitoring. Standalone financial-planning clients do not.

Can Fairchild Capital place trades in client accounts?

For comprehensive clients, Fairchild Capital takes discretionary authority, subject to reasonable restrictions clients may impose. It does not place trades for standalone financial-planning clients.

What retirement topics can ongoing planning address?

Depending on the engagement, planning may address retirement income, investments, taxes, benefits, healthcare, major decisions, risks and estate coordination. The advisory agreement controls the actual scope.

How often is an ongoing financial plan reviewed?

The appropriate review schedule depends on the service agreement and household. Material changes in income, spending, markets, taxes, health or family circumstances can also create a reason to revisit the plan.

How does Fairchild Capital charge for comprehensive wealth management?

The current Form CRS states that the comprehensive service charges a percentage-of-assets fee quarterly in arrears and may have minimum fees. Ask Fairchild Capital for the fee applicable to your household.

Does Fairchild Capital require a minimum investment?

Its current Form CRS reports no minimum account size or investment amount. Minimum fees may still apply to the comprehensive service.

How is ongoing planning different from one-time planning?

Ongoing comprehensive service includes portfolio management and continuous investment monitoring. Standalone planning provides guidance for an agreed engagement, but Fairchild Capital does not place trades or continuously monitor investments for those clients.
